How to transfer files to the system

There are two methods that can be used to transfer files to the supercomputer system as follows:

File transfer using sftp

Connecting by sftp to the gateway server of this system ( is possible. Please make an sftp connection to the gw server and execute file transfer. This site does not provide detailed procedures for installing the sftp client nor for using it on the user terminal. Each user should install and use the appropriate sftp client on their PC as necessary.

File transfer using Aspera

What is Aspera?

This is a commercial software program that efficiently transfers large-capacity files by effectively utilizing the WAN bandwidth. To transfer files that are larger than several hundred MBs when the bandwidth of the connection between the user terminal and NIG is not very large, use of Aspera is recommended.

How to use Aspera

This system uses Aspera Connect Server (with the total bandwidth for connection supporting 1000 Mbps. Server name:

To transfer files from the user terminal using Aspera, the Aspera client (software program name: Aspera Connect) must be installed on the client computer. If it has not yet been installed, download the client from the download site URL and install it. The OSs that support the client are Windows, Mac, and Linux. Select the client version to be downloaded by the type of OS in the client PC at hand, and download and install the latest stable version. Explanation of the client software installation procedure is not provided here.

How to use the Aspera client on Linux

If Aspera Connect is installed properly, it should be possible to execute the ascp command. One of the methods to instruct file transfer by using ascp command from the command line is as follows:

$ ascp [option] -P 33001 [file name to be transmitted] [user account name on NIG Super][file transmission destination path]

Conversely, to receive files from the Aspera Connect server, the following procedure should be carried out:

$ ascp [option] -P 33001 [user account name on NIG Super][file transmission destination path] [local path]

The basic options that can be specified are as follows:

-T Data is not encrypted. Security is low but the transfer speed is high.
-l "value" The upper limit for data transfer speed is specified. The upper limit value is specified in “value,” and the unit can be specified using alphabetical characters such as “10M.” In this system, “1G” is the upper limit and 10M is the default value when this option is not specified.
The transfer efficiency is lower if a value exceeding the line speed is specified. Specifying approximately 10M to 100M is recommended.

For other detailed options that can be specified, please refer to the Aspera Connect documents provided at the Developer’s document site.
